Fujitsu
and Toshiba are currently engaged in talks on combining their mobile phone
operations, Bloomberg reported on June 11, 2010. It is expected that the merged
entity will become Japan's second largest mobile phone manufacturer. In terms
of shipment volume, Fujitsu is three times larger than Toshiba, and it is
estimated that Fujitsu would hold a majority stake in the new entity should the
merger follow through.
With
Kyocera's merger of Sanyo's mobile phone unit and Mitsubishi's retreat from the
mobile phone sector, consolidation in the Japanese mobile phone industry has
accelerated ever since. Casio, Hitachi and NEC have merged their mobile phone
businesses into one unit, NEC CASIO Mobile Communications, on July 1, 2010.
